I could wait no longer before putting my first mark on this blog’s theme. Apart from the theme being very basic the original theme it did not display the sidebar on post pages. The only way to navigate to other posts was to hit next /previous or to click on the title to go back to the home page. This tends to bug me when I am reading blogs and looking for something in particular. I also tend to read a post first and look at sidebar contents afterwards. If the sidebar is not there I am less likely to stay around on a blog as long.
As a reminder here is a shot of the original theme - the default Kubrik theme.
Now to the new theme. It is not exactly attractive but as I am going to write about styling as I go along, I thought a blank canvas would suit the bill. Changes made will be more easily seen. I used one of the default Wordpress designs so that you can follow along whether you host on your own domain or use wordpress.com. All the changes I make to the design will be via the theme’s CSS stylesheet (style.css). No other file will be altered. If you are thinking of changing over to Wordpress or just want to learn some simple styling techniques you could consider starting a test Wordpress.com blog.
The theme I chose is based on what is called ‘The Sandbox‘ which gives many more styling options than the usual theme. I will be sticking to some of the more basic styling options though so do not despair! Because of its nature the theme is good for beginners and more advanced designers alike.

I will certainly take note of your changes as I may be able to apply some of this to my WP “get painted” blog….it has been rather neglected of late….
I had to remove formatting from a template rather than add it in this case. That made a change
Your blogger blog is looking great. It certainly is possible to make a blogspot blog not look like a blogspot blog. It would be good if they work out how to allow you to host this new version on your own domain. It is only possible with classic blogger at present.
It looks quite simple - and I like that. It helps me keep the focus on the content. But on a long term, you will need to make it more brandable.
I intend to keep it simple and clear but there are many improvements in the pipeline. I think I may start from the top down - favicon, header image, font sizes etc.
I like the width of the main column and overall three columns definitely displays things a bit better.. I also like the simplicity of this theme..
Thanks Pearl. The basic layout is more or less OK but there is a lot of styling to do to tidy it up and give it more appeal.
