The quick answer to why we need good navigation on our blogs is “useability” but as that term could refer to how easy it is to use your mp3 player or washing machine I should expand on this.
If we consider where we want our readers to go, after they have read the page they are currently on, the answer will usually be “Somewhere else on my site”.
Unfortunately menu bars and sidebar menus can become littered not only with too many hard to find links but with too many external links in the wrong places. Your navigation needs a purpose, a planned direction, a guidance system.
Consider:
Where can your visitors go to on your blog?
- Post pages so that they are more likely to leave a comment.
- “Read more” type post pages where you are not displaying full posts. (to hopefully leave a comment)
- Recent Posts so that regular readers can catch up on what they have missed (to hopefully leave a comment)
- Archives (to…. I think you get the drift)
- Popular Posts - if you have that feature installed.
- Back to the home page
- An about page (except on Blogger where I suggest you create an “about me” post and link to that as an about page rather than to the default Blogger profile - then readers stay on your site.)
- To a contact form or email link to send you a personal message.
- To posts found with an internal blog search.
- Your turn to suggest more please.
Apart from your site there are other places you may wish your visitors to go ( I am not counting those that leave rude comments or spam - where you may wish them to go is probably not to another webpage!)
- To a subscription page after clicking a Feed button.
- To a social media site to favorite, fave, add, digg, stumble or bump you to give some kudos and link love.

- To visit your blogging friends via a blogroll, as hopefully their blogroll will also be leading readers to you.

I like your arrow -I think a well sign posted CCOMMENTS - some new blogs I stumble across it is so hard to find where to comment.
Another question if I may - how do you get blogger comments to open and stay on the same page ?
A few people have a link to their donate or buy me a beer button LOL.

Hi Trish, you could try this hack to get your blogger comments on the same page - have not tried it myself but if you have any problems with it please let me know and I will give you a hand:

Yes I have seen a few of those too - I don’t mind them on sites that offer something extra where the author has spent a lot of time - eg a plugin, widget or template.
I used to have most recent posts widget shown, but since my readers can already see the recent posts straight from the main page anyway, I took it out from my blog
Michael Aulia’s last blog post..Why caching is important for your blog
You have a very good point there Michael although I know that when I am surfing and happen across new blogs I tend to look for a recent post feature to see if it is worth my while looking further. We all have different browsing habits. It would be interesting to find out how many people do look at a recent post list.
Hi and thank you for the great suggestions. I list all my blog titles for the year under the year title near the top of my opening page.
Once the year is over I put them in a scrollable text box to save room. Mind you I’m not a prolific writer but having gone to alot of work to get them out, I don’t want them to disappear into the blogosphere. Just a suggestion!
Peter McCartney’s last blog post..Second Life Gamble
I agree that things get so easily lost in the normal archives and you have a good idea there.
I probably have too many posts to do the same but do have a separate page that lists all my posts by category and I use a tag cloud in my sidebar. I am able to put things into categories more easily than you would be able to do because of my blog topic.
Interesting and great advices - nice to see them summarized in once.
I think I have most of it, although I miss a ‘contact page’ on my blog. Is yours a plug in for WP?
Btw: I’m here as I’m going through my blogroll and visit friends (so finally your in
