Welcome to Blogging Sueblimely. To keep up with my posts you can subscribe to my RSS feed and follow me on Twitter. Thanks for visiting!
Following my tutorial on adding borders to images I have been researching current online image editing applications which will allow you to do this and much more. Because of my web design activities I use Photoshop for image creation but the newer online editors are impressive and provide most of the editing functions I would require: they are much easier to use too.
Image Editors with extensive features
As well as allowing for upload of images from your computer, these applications allow you to import/export from other sites such as Flickr, Photobucket, Picasa, Facebook and MySpace.
Common Features include:
- cropping and resizing
- color adjustment and enhancing
- red eye reduction
- add text
- add frames and borders
- various fancy filters and effects
- Fotoflexer - grandly calls itself the "the world’s most advanced online image editor" but it does have a host of impressive features; from the more standard editing functions of to a range of fancy effects.

- Flaunter is a suite of applications: PhotoEdit for the more basic jobs, PhotoStylr which includes effects, and PhotoProfilr which will create avatars and profile photos . which has a good range of features, is quick loading and also allows you to create digital scrapbooks, ecards, greeting cards and invitations
- Picnik - Another very advanced online editor with lots of easily applied effects. I got a little carried away using this as you can see.
Images - Broome Western Australia
UltraViolet Observations
- Splashup (previously known asFauxto)- Another multi featured editor with an interface like a that of a desktop program. It does not have all the fancy built in effects of the other two but it does allow more manipulation of images. If you have used programs such as Photoshop then you will find this simple to use, otherwise there may be a bit of a learning curve.

Other online image editors
These don’t come with all the special features of the above applications but do provide basic editing tools, which may be all you need the majority of the time.
- MyImager.com
- Phixr
- Pixer.us
- Snipshot - integrates with Firefox via a browser bookmarklet and allows you to integrate it into a website.
- Wiredness
In invite only beta
Aviary sounds and looks interesting but as I have only just signed up and have not got an invite as yet, I could not try it out. Aviary is a suite of online applications with tools, all named after birds, for image editing, typography, music, video and 3D. Aviary is aimed more at designers and artist rather than those who just want basic image editing tools. Their blog has a host of examples of what it can do - it looks pretty impressive to me and I like the idea that tutorials are available.
I have collected an extensive list of editing tools over the years but they do not compare with the capabilities of these newer ones. I have scrapped that list now and I will add to and update this list to keep it current. Please let me know if you have have any favorite image tools (online or desktop) and I will check them out for inclusion here or in a future post in this series on images.
Future posts will include where to find free images, websites that help you search for them and tools that do specific tasks.

Hi! Just back from FotoFlexer and it looks and works just great. I had toyed with the idea of buying photoshop or photoshop elements, but with my tight budget this will suit me just fine. Thank you again for your great links - Take Care, Peter

Unless you want to get really serious about image editing and creating, these online applications will do virtually everything you need.
If you do want more then try Gimp which is a free desktop program. As with Photoshop it comes with a learning curve but it is excellent.
Thanks for this awesome roundup of image editors. I hate it when I need to edit an image, but I’m at a computer without any type of editing software.
I’ve used Picnik and Splashup before with great results. I’ll have to check the others out next time I need image help.

I will be covering other less feature rich but more specific handy online image applications soon - for quick image resizing, resizing for the web etc.
Thanks for this awesome list! I’m always on the lookout for great resources, and will definitely be checking these out.

Thanks Dianne - I will keep this list up to date and put it somewhere in the blog menu where it can be easily found.
This kind off stuff is actually quite simple. If you have a dedicated server, you can use the popular open source image editor, GIMP. via the command line. Using this method you can offer people pretty much anything Photoshop does and more.
Gimp is great although I have never used it on my server. I do not have a dedicated server.
dammit woman! Now another lot of things to check out and distract me from housework!

Distracting you from housework - you should be thanking me for taking you away from life’s humdrum tasks into the world of creativity :-)The kids will understand if they do not have any clean clothes to wear, surely.
Wow, that is an impressive list and must have taken some time to compile. I’ve noticed that flickr has installed a pretty cool photo editing function but I am not sure that it offers the solution for including borders.

Hi Sire
Good to see you here. Thanks for the nod on the flickr photo editing function. I will go and check it out. In this post I concentrated on general fully featured editing tools but I have one about ready to go on more specific tools - except I keep finding them and then find something else that does the job better or does not have annoying ads and pop ups.
Thanks for the tips, your framed images really look prof!! I will have to check out flickrs photo editing since I already have a lot of photos uploaded to that service.

Nice pic. Oh wait…you stole them off my blog!! Thanks mum! I use Picasa at work and Photoshop Elements at home, but the monitor at work is dodgy (as you know), so I never know whether I need to adjust the colour in my pics or not. What do you think? Have the ones on my blog come out ok?

Hi Sue, this is an excellent list. I had never heard of any of these before; generally I use GIMP for whatever I need (usually just resizing, etc). I’m always impressed at your good use of graphics - now we all know how you do it!

thanx joo
I’ve been trying these online image editors, but noticed that the editing process is much slower than using a software photo editor on a PC. Still, they are great for an occasional edit.
