Problogger has released the results of its 2008 survey on how much money bloggers make. It makes interesting viewing. Although figures were also shown for 2006 and 2007, I wanted a clearer picture of how the 3 years compared; not only to work out if there were any increases but to compare like with like – i.e. comparing those likely to answer surveys via ProBlogger from one year to the next..
The results of my comparisons can be seen below and represent the amounts earned by the survey participants in October 2006, 2007 and 2008 expressed as a percentage of the total participating. The figures do not include those who make no money from blogging.

The charts below gives a clearer, simpler picture.

No surprise is that the majority of bloggers earn under $10 a month, although I suspect this is from lack of real effort and the use of Adsense only. Adsense is well known, easy to set up and the option to include it is even inbuilt into Blogger blogspot. Making money is likely not a main priority for these bloggers.
What surprised me was that 408 respondents (10%) earned over $15,000 in 2008, up from 7% in 2006. This represents a third of those earning over $500 a month. ProBlogger is likely to attract responses from other high money making bloggers. If I conducted such a survey on this blog I am sure the picture would be different.
As you can see there is a general increase in the amounts made since 2006 and only a portion of this would be accounted for by inflation. Why could this be? I have my own theories but will post these separately tomorrow.
My figures were taken from Problogger’s survey results at How Much Money Do Bloggers Make Blogging?

Awesome post, it’s always interesting to see how much money people make from bloging and to see what sort of potential money can be raised if you do the job right. My blog has only been going for around 2-3 months now and I’m starting to make some nice cash, just need to put a little more effort to earn the extra bucks

I wonder how that picture would change in 2009 with all that economy situation…
Do you have some thoughts about that?

I think the 2009 chart we will see an Increase for sure, with the economic situation more and more people will turn to making money online as a way to supplement lower income, or a loss of a job.

It’s interesting that the only bloggers making substantially more money in 2008 are bloggers at the highest level. I wonder why the small guy (part time blogger) isn’t doing as well. Is this a result of Google’s algorithm changes, more competition, or some other factor?

This is really interesting info you collected. My goals for this year are to go over $15,000. (I like to dream big!)
I only started making money online last year, not really knowing what I was doing…but the last few months everything has really fallen into place. Adsense is tricky for a lot of people, but its actually one of my bigger/more steady earners bringing me checks every month
Maybe some of the reason for it being less is that there are more and more blogs – I don’t think its over saturated yet, but certainly a few blogs are stealing the market share from others!

It is Interesting to see how things have changed over the last few years. Many more people are getting involved, and the ones who are not making money are the ones who are not putting in enough effort (like you said).
Thanks for the post.

Thank you for the interesting information. This helpful for people like me who makes their first steps in Blogging. There are many people who doesn’t make much money, but there many that do.
I don’t get your graph called “How much money bloggers made October 2006-2008 Chart 2″.
If you add the percentages for each year you’ll get far more than 100%. Shouldn’t it add up to only 100%?
Thanks a lot for the cool information that I found here. It is really a big help to me.

Social networks will get more and more influence in 2009; it’s what I expect to happen. And everything depends on how good is the content and how active are you in the network. But your results are interesting indeed. I would have not expected bogcatalog to actually bring someone.
When social networks get more and more influence, it will be interesting to see whether that influence is allocated to a few major networks (Facebook, Linked In, etc.) or among thousands of niche networks.

Again, another story of 10% law.
Only 10% will success, it seems to be true in every industry.
Thanks for the nice charts.
The only law of development is true everywhere in the affiliate market as well.
I’m not sure how conclusive this survey is really.
Like you say, it attracts a lot of the high flighing bloggers and is less likely to attract the bloggers than have tried and failed to make money.
If you put in the effort and the time you are likely to get rewarded. Spend enough time and you’re bound to succeed eventually!

Hi Sue,
Just wondering; you said that those Bloggers that were earning $10 per month were using just Adsense.
I was wondering if you could disclose what money programs the sites that were earning more were using?
Cheers, Andy
Interesting to know that on one side, the majority of bloggers earn under $10 a month. On the other hand, there are bloggers who earned over $15,000. Thanks for this great post.

The only thing I wonder about this is how the stats would look like with the world of bloggers all of them voting, unfortunately with statistics you can never be 100% accurate as you don’t have the data of the entire world, but only a small percentage of that world, hehe.

People do get the chance to make more money as time passes. People who took the survey the first year will certainly be earning more. Than again some folks haven’t made a dime still, so in a way it’s kind of a wash.
Perhaps they made more money in 2008, however, 2009 will prove to be a down year due to economic conditions. I guess we’ll wait and see. – Colleen

I think I would be pretty depressed if I only made 10 a month. Unless I had just started, but if it was a steady 10 a month… I would feel that it was useless. I can understand why more people are making over 15,000 in 2008. Bloggers are increasing, skill is increasing, etc. 2009 shall see an increase for sure as well.
till then,
Jean

Everything here depends on the sphere, to my mind. Some stopics of blogs bring money, some don’t.
