Christmas Image Tutorials

Strobist lets us into some secrets of How to Photograph Christmas Lights using even a basic digital camera. I love Christmas lights although the ones I have appreciated the most this year were the new green and red lights in the car park of a newly renovated shopping centre which showed me the way which spots were free.

Smashing Magazine gives us 60 Beautiful Christmas Photoshop Tutorials

PS Lover has a whole range of Photoshop Christmas Image tutorials but turn your speakers down as they advertise those very annoying smilies who keep saying “Hellooo”

What not to do when blogging

Finally but not least, Michaela Lica of eWritings has provided us with some good Christmas blogging reading by publishing her ebook Blogging Tips: How to be Cocky and Vexatious – a collection of blog entries that followed her 10 Ways to Make Your Fellow Bloggers Hate You meme.

Thanks to Design Bliss for putting me on to many of these freebies in their – Over 100 Free Christmas Design Resources – A Design Bliss Mega-List post

I am now off to join the teaming throngs at the shopping centre which is enough to provoke this Christmas emotion in anyone:

You could show your appreciation of your online friends by sending Christmas greetings by email, via a Christmas eCard or your Social Networking Sites.

Facebook Applications:

Fun Cards – Christmas & More!

Say Merry Christmas in any language

Other Social Networks

Find a good Christmassy webpage or video and send it as a shout to your Stumbleupon, to your Digg/ MyBlogLog/BlogCatalog or other social network contacts. Let them know that it is not for a thumbs up or a vote but a seasonal greeting.

While we are talking of thumbs up, I would like to send one to a blogger, virtual assistant and author I admire, Kathie Thomas, for spreading Christmas cheer on her Much About Melbourne blog. As you are extremely likely not to live in Melbourne you may be more familiar with some of her other blogs, as listed on Technorati.

Elf Yourself:

I thought this deserved a special mention. If you have a little bit of free time, a musical animated Elf yourself creation produces an amusing and well appreciated Christmas greeting. You can your own images for the faces of the dancing elves.

E Cards:

As with many of the Christmas graphics sites, my search for good e-card sites would be useful for Santa in working out who had been naughty or nice. Some of them would not deserve his nocturnal visit this year. Sites that are using Christmas keywords when they shouldn’t, invasive pop-ups and a whole host of sites that activated Firefox WOT extension warning notices, which I did not ignore.

There are many legitimate sites that offer a small selection of cards but I have stuck to those that give you the widest choices in the list below:

Care2 a wide variety of animated Christmas eCards available and you can click on

123 Christmas Cards

American Greetings

123 Greetings over 200 free Christmas eCards, including funny, religious, formal, and Santa Claus-themed

Stationery gifts were the theme of the first Aussie Bloggers Forum Secret Santa and although I use the PC far more than pen and paper I am still a stationery Magpie. My blogging nest never fails to make room for more but there is also a need for containers to hold it all so that I can lay my beak on what I need when I need it.

It was with anticipation and a certain amount of childlike excitement that I opened my Secret Santa. I was not disappointed. As you can see my parcel contained a treasure chest of bright and useful goodies, complete with its own container.

Many thanks to my Secret Santa for a delightfully presented and thoughtful gift. Thanks too to all the members of Aussie Bloggers Forum, who have not only provided me with help and ideas throughout the year but kindness and friendship too. These forums show that blogging means far more than writing posts and promoting them so that they are read. Whatever the reason you blog and and whether you are aiming for multitudes or a small close circle of readers, building up a network, social or business, is an important and integral part of the process.

Brightening up your blog for Christmas may need the services of stock photo sites. There are plenty of sites offering free Christmas images and clipart but it is hard to find your way through popup ads and flashing glittery images (that is not intended for Christmas) to find something useful.

For Photos Morgue File, FreeFoto.com and Dreamstime’s free section offer a good range; Flickr too if you search for images that you are allowed to use. I always use the Compfight Flickr search site to look for Creative Commons images.

For Christmas Clipart, hellasmultimedia.com has a large selection of images, lines and borders and Clipart Guide has almost 500 images. Microsoft Office clip art library is always worth a look at for simple clipart.

If you want to easily add some graphics to Christmas Newsletters try one of the free Christmas Dingbat fonts. The one below is from Winter Yawns.

Chelle from "it might be love" is Spreading Christmas Cheer Online – and Off with a whole host of posts on Christmas Songs, free Christmas Printables and link love

Ching Ya from It’s my Life – It’s Now or Never is really getting into the Christmas spirit with a December of Christmas topics – including Guest Posts, Fun Clips, Music, and Games to play. She is offering to share the fun by doing a post-exchange with her. She says as a rookie blogger she realizes how even the simplest thing you do could mean a lot to another. Her challenge post is aptly titled "Do you hear what I hear?

Jayne is intermingling some old Christmas tips into her Australian History snippets on Our Great Southern Land My favorite " Great Aunt Hepzibah’s Handy Hints – When in-laws arrive unexpectantly (or invite themselves along for a feed on Chrissy Day) prepare them pigs ears; scrape and clean in boiling water, then braise in a pan. Slice into thin strips, smother the lot in sauteed onions and serve with dash of balsamic vinegar."

Jen who is Semantically Driven has joined in the spirit with
Christmas cheer and a facelift and a new red/orange/green theme with a very creative header.

Kelley in her own Magnetoboldtoo inimitable style and Burgh Baby ,who has her own brand of crazy, are challenging us to take some pics of the Christmas insanity that surrounds us and post them on Dec 20th in You want crazy? I will show you mine if you show me yours

Kim of Laketrees has given away a free portrait for Christmas drawn by her own skillful hands – Portrait of Daphne finished…..

Shinade of The Painted Veil who spreads her cheer all year long is displaying a magnificent Christmas blog theme and if I had seen her wreath image on her menu I may have chosen that instead of the bells, although I did have some fun in making my bells ring when you hover.

Trish from My Little Drummer Boys is planning to take part although her blog is on hold until she sorts out a problem with someone stealing her content. Anyway, I am always cheered when visiting her blog when I view the photos of her adorable twin boys.

Suggestions for showing your appreciation

Ching Ya is showing her appreciation of blogging friends by:

visiting/commenting on their blogs regularly

link love/brief review on their wonderful posts/blogs

showing gratitude through social medias. (technorati, digg etc)

More ideas are welcomed. If you want to join in the Challenge please read Blogging Christmas Challenge for details.

Do you hear what I hear? It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas and Santa Claus is coming to town. As it’s the "most wonderful time of the year" let’s spread some blogging cheer and, whatever your beliefs, remember the season’s message of goodwill to all men and the spirit of giving.

The reality is that Christmas time can be stressful, lonely and sad for many people so I am laying down a yuletide challenge to you – help make it a wonderful time of year for fellow bloggers and blog readers.

Let’s show our appreciation for those who have provided us with good reads, those who have helped us on our blogging paths, those who take the time to comment and those who have become virtual friends. Even if we do not know a blogger we can make this a time to reach out to them, established bloggers and newcomers alike. We can also show our gratitude to the non-bloggers we know who visit us. Let us spread tidings of comfort and joy in whatever way we are able.

Until Christmas I am going to show my own appreciation for those who join in with this challenge by spreading some link love. I will be posting about your ideas and recognizing those who take part. You could say that I am "making a list, and checking it twice; gonna find out who’s naughty and nice.". I am creating a special blog section for my ‘nice list’ and Christmas topics.

We can help foster the spirit of Christmas in our blogs by adding seasonal design elements. I will also be sharing some tools and resources that you can use if you want to deck your blogs "with boughs of holly" or just want to get yourself or your blog into the spirit of Christmas

The first part of my challenge is:

Go tell it on the mountain – Pass on details of this challenge to others in whatever way you prefer – a blog post, a tweet, send to friends on Stumbleupon, by email, by posting about it on different sites … Let me know that you are taking part by leaving a comment here and/or subscribing to my updates via RSS or email.

Let us know your ideas for fostering the spirit of Christmas and spreading Christmas wishes to your blog readers.

Those who do this will be on the top of my Christmas list.

Don’t forget to have yourself a merry little Christmas.

I have been considering setting up blogs for a couple of friends as a Christmas gift; offering them ongoing support to help them learn and get their blogs off the ground. If I had the time there are quite a few other friends and family members who I feel would benefit from blogging for various reasons. Some have already shown interest but do not have the time or quite enough motivation to take the plunge. Having a blog set up for them, even if only for practice purposes to begin with, would give them the start they need to at least give it a go.

Being passionate about blogging and all the benefits it can offer I am always keen to introduce others to it. I am not sure I am a good salesperson though and could do with some ideas of how to convince others blogging would be of benefit to them.

I would appreciate some help here. Have any of you introduced friends and family to blogging and how did you achieve this? You could even point me in the direction of posts on the subject too.

If you are asked what presents you would like for Christmas why not choose something that will make your blogging life easier:

A tux droid sounds like a perfect blogger’s companion. Take this cute little wifi penguin with you around the house and he will alert you of new RSS feeds and incoming email. Keep him by your side at the computer for when you are totally absorbed in writing posts. He will speak your Google calendar events out loud so that you cannot ignore your appointments. I wonder if he can be programmed to say “You have a comment”?

From firebox.com

For those times when blogging gets you hot under the collar there is no need to leave your desk to reach out for a cold refreshing “tinny”. Keep a can of your favorite drink at hand in a USB fridge. Very hand for ladies of a certain age who are getting hot ‘blog rushes’.

From Deals Direct Australia

For those of you who, despite appreciating what modern technology has to offer, long for some of the more traditional offerings of yesteryear, the USB Hoover allows you to combine the two. You do not have to leave your chair, interrupting your train of thought, to clean up the little messes caused by eating lunch at your desk while posting.

from find me a gift

I know, despite all good intentions, that I need to do more exercise. Blogging and its peripheral activities reduces the time available. How about this solution to encourage you to exercise without reducing the time available for blogging – The cycle powered laptop: The Polytechnic of Madrid’s winning entry in an Intel sponsored competition to find renewable and sustainable methods to power laptops. The runner up used hydrogen. I wonder if that would make for lighter laptops? My daughter has to wear all natural fibres at work because of her daily task of releasing hydrogen weather balloons. If I keep on talking like this I may be able to use my ‘hot air’ to power this laptop!

You can even find instructions for a do it yourself version on Instructibles

We received an early Christmas present yesterday, from a UK visitor from who is staying with us, (Thanks Gary). The gift, a light up running reindeer, will be gracing our roof with cheerful sparkle. Thinking it would look very lonely on its own out there, we have strung up other outside lights.

Christmas Warehouse

I must admit I do really enjoy these sort of aspects of Christmas and I always have decorated the inside of the house. Part of the child in me remains, which I think helps when you have children of your own. I wonder what my style of decoration says about me. I do not have to continue wondering after discovering that Allie D of Memories of a Gouda has given us her psychological assessment of personality; based on the type of Christmas Light display we favor – The Christmas Light Personality Test

Interested in discovering the impact of the upcoming festive season on the blogging world, I jumped on my sleigh and did a quick circumvent of the blogging world to find that the Christmas spirit is indeed coming alive. Blogs are decking their themes with Christmas images and posts, new ones are popping up dedicated to the event and Christmas memes abound.

My search was delayed a while when I became engrossed in the preparations going on at the North Pole on Santa Claus Blog

Imaginif is running a competition with an important theme Christmas Competition: Child Safety Tips. Prize money equals AU$1 for each entry in the Child Safety Tip competition. Entry is by way of leaving your safety tip in a comment to the post.

ChristmasMaps.com is running a series of contests between now and Christmas: So far they are:

“ChristmasMaps.com loves Bloggers” runs until December 15th. Entering the contest involves commenting on their Santa’s Blog.

ChristmasMaps.com Winner Take All – The blogger who can convince the most number of people to visit their site wins a gift card from an online retailer.

Details of the contests and prizes, including more ways to qualify for entry, can be found on the contest page.

Please let me know if there are other blogs with Christmas content of interest.
