Elyse Bruce is raising awareness and funds for autism with her "Countdown to Midnight" CD. It's got awesome music on it, and best of all, the money gathered DOES NOT go to Autism Speaks, an organization considered offensive to most autistics.

Pass the word.

I think only between about 4-7% of kids with Autism have Fragile X and although most FX kids have some Autism symptoms not all are diagnosed as being Autistic.

You are right the more awareness and knowledge the better - Autism is so common and there is still a lot of misunderstanding about it in the wider community. That is obvious the way people stare at my son because of his unusual mannerisms, which of course as his mum I love because they are just part of what makes my son who he is.

There is a lot unknown but it amazes me how much has been discovered and learned in recent times. The new research is really encouraging with drug treatment going through human trials and a method of actually reversing the effects on the brain just discovered (in mice only as yet)

I am pleased that kids are being tested more for FX these days - means that the docs are more aware of it.

Although adult males with FX often have long faces this feature is often not present in young children - I think it is something that develops more over time - another result of loose connective tissue problems.

FX cannot be passed on from fathers to sons because they can only pass their y chromosome on to boys.

Thanks for this article and link :)
My son was tested for Fragile X after his autism diagnosis.
I think Aussie Autism month is in May, but it can't hurt to bring people's attention to this condition at anytime.

Jayne's last blog post..Trivial History March 28
