Best Thunderbird Addins To Save Time

organized email
Image: by mybloodyself flckr icon

My previous post on Thunderbird covered methods to organize and keep up with your emails. This post will show you extra techniques to use, to speed up the process further, by using a small selection of Thunderbird addins.

QuickFolders (Folder Tabs) 0.9.9.5

This is a real time saver for storing your emails if you have a lot of Thunderbird folders. Dragging your most used folders to the QuickFolders toolbar creates shortcut tabs to them. When you want to move emails to these folders, instead of having to search among the sidebar folder tree, you now just drag an email to the folder tab you wish to store it in.

Thunderbird quickfolders

Tag Toolbar

This extension displays your tags as tabs on a toolbar. Tag or untag an email quickly by clicking on the relevant tab..You can also filter the tags to be displayed by categorizing tags. For example you could add a ‘work’ category and choose to display only the tags you have categorized as work in the toolbar.

Thunderbird addons Tags

Quick Text

To save time you time if you send out a lot of emails containing the same text, Quicktext allows you to create templates for insertion into your mail. Creating multiple signatures is also possible.

Integrating other Email Accounts

It is not easy to get by without a Gmail account, because of all the Google applications that demand it although having an email address other than that of your IP is wise for anonymity sake.

To save time having to log into Gmail separately and reading two lots of emails it is simple to import Gmail into Thunderbird. You also create a backup of Gmail in the process. You can set up Thunderbird (and Outlook) to receive POP or IMAP email or to just forward all mail received in Gmail. Visit your Gmail Settings/Forwarding and POP/IMAP page to turn on these features and to read instructions for configuring Thunderbird to receive POP or IMAP emails. With POP the emails are downloaded to your compute, whereas with IMAP all mail is kept on the Gmail server which is a slower process.

If you don’t fancy setting things up manually, the Gmail IMAP Account Setup Thunderbird extension or Mozilla Webmail extension can help you. Webmail can also bring your Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, mail.com and Libero accounts into Thunderbird.

Google Contacts synchronizes your Google Contacts with Thunderbird saving you time having to set address cards up manually.

If you know of other Thunderbird addins or methods that save time with your email reading and storing please do let us know.

It’s interesting to see an email program that allows plugins. This whole notion of software allowing plugins, like Firefox, could create a new model for software. I like the idea of software being able to respond to future needs for features through an open framework that allows plugins.

Many would prefer applications that had all options included but not all utilities suit all people. Addins give you the opportunity to choose what you want without bloating the program. Many open source programs and those that allow access to their API have been doing this for years and more and more are following suit.

I love the plugins available for Firefox, in my opinion this is why it stands out above IE and Chrome. Hopefully it will be a feature for many new programs to come.

It’s good to see that TB is getting some nice plugins built for it. When I was on Windows it seemed a pretty good client, but was lacking some of the power of Outlook. However with all these plugins I am sure it will be giving M$ a run for their money.

I have been using Thunderbird without addins for over 2 years now. Much prefer it to Outlook or Express. These addins are now making it much easier to keep on top of my emails which have grown out of all proportion over the years.

Hello! I am from Belarus. Therefore, I am sorry for my bad English.

I have been reading your project sueblimely.com via translate.google.com. Now I want to help you. … Yesterday, I learned that you have the plugin, which is a serious error. Plugin – Top Commentators Widget. Error in plugin allows any user to take a place in the list of active commentators. To do this, leave only 1 comment! To this end, the visitor must:

1. leave a comment
2. specify any name that is already in the LIST Top Commentators (eg, Daniel),
3. link to your site

Now the list of Top Commentators, under the name Daniel will be a link on someone else’s site.

Detailed, I described here – http://www.vse-ok.com/2009/03/17/bag-v-plagine-top-commentators-widget-dayot-eshhyo-odnu-lazejku-dlya-optimizatorov

Sue, I’ve noticed the problem on other sites as well. Maybe the plugin author will fix it soon. To be clear, the problem is that when someone uses the name of another person already on the Top Commenters List, they can replace the URL of that name. In this way, the person can get a link to their site. Still, this isn’t a major problem because the issue is resolved as soon as the real person with that name adds another comment, because at that moment the URL is restored.
