Andrew, you raise an important point: a blog’s original post doesn’t always tell the full story, but comments often fill in the missing pieces. For this reason, blogs that allow comments, and have a lot of comments, are often more credible. I often review comments to a post to judge its credibility or see if anyone has added helpful points to the topic.

You raise an interesting point: how do you handle a blog that generates lots of comments? Like you said, some blog owners just shut off the comments. I’ve noticed that other blog owners don’t respond to (and probably don’t read) the comments. I’m not sure which, of those two options, is the better course of action.

Channels are a way of tracking how well different sorts of adsense blocks are doing. Eg is a leaderboard doing better than a banner, do ads on one page do better than those on another page.

Thanks for all the wonderful advice! I really appreciate, how much time you spend for us figuring out all the best ways to blog. I’m trying to figure out this adsense thing and can’t get it to come up on my sidebar…will have to search your site to see because Google makes it all so difficult. Trying to figure out ‘channels’ and even though they explain, I still don’t get it…

I would never turn off commenting for my blog. This is what makes a blog interesting…the interaction between the reader and the writer.

I just installed the SezWho plugin and I’ll be interested to see how it goes. I’ve read some negative feedback that it slows down your load time, but I haven’t seen a significant difference.

I’m a reader rather than a blogger, for me half the fun is reading the comments. However, I understand how sifting through the spam could be too time consuming and possibly even demoralizing.
However, you’ve encouraged me to possibly start a blog.
