The amount of money being made by blogging is is increasing according to the analysis I made of ProBlogger’s survey figures in yesterday’s post. Did Bloggers Make More Money in 2008?
Why could this be?
- We are getting more knowledgeable about making money online, thanks to bloggers such as Darren Rowse and others, plus various new training programs and schemes.
- The huge increase in numbers of those blogging about how to earn money online makes it hard to remain totally ignorant about it.
- The more commonly ads are seen on blogs the more acceptable they become and yet more bloggers take part.
- An increase in the amount of ad networks and affiliate programs targeting bloggers?
- Bloggers plugging these affiliate programs on their blogs and via other networks to earn money from signing up others.
- An increase in social networking among bloggers, who learn about money making methods from others?
- More advanced blogging software that allows for easier additions of ads through widgets.
- Knowing there is money to be made by blogging has attracted more of those who enter into it for this reason alone. and more businesses are starting blogs to plug their own products.
- Buying online is more accepted overall. With the increase in online stores, auctions sites such as ebay and retail outlets with online buying it has become very normal to purchase online. We are less afraid of giving out our credit card numbers and companies such as Paypal feed this sense of security.
- The more that are interested in making money by blogging the more profitable it becomes for those offering training and peripheral services.
I have not made any money from blog advertising, although I have started earning from creating websites using WordPress as a CMS system rather than other Content Management Systems. Then again I have not put any effort into seriously trying to make money via this blog so it is not surprising. I research the subject but all the get rich quick schemes tend to put me off. However, the results of Darren’s survey and all the reasons why it should now be more profitable than a couple of years ago are encouraging. If you have but dabbled in making money online in the past more effort may well pay dividends.

Happy New Year to you and your family Sue….
wishing you a great holiday too
laketreess last blog post..Happy Birthday Alexander!!
Happy New Year babe.
I have made a little from BlogHer ads, enough to cover my internet access each month at least, but now they have reduced the bloggers cut. Which is a shame.
I didn’t get into blogging to make money, it has been a pleasant side effect, but I do think that in Australia we are at a slight disadvantage given the opportunities afforded those in the US.
I blog for the fun and the community, if I make a little pocket money on the side that is awesome!
Kelleys last blog post..New Years Resolutions. Where I make an unbreakable promise.
Kelley: The fact that you didn’t get into blogging for money may contribute to your long term blogging success. Too many people grow tired with blogging when the goal is merely money. The fact that you enjoy blogging will give you staying-power, surpassing others who tire out.

The money must come in really handy to satisfy the need for shoes and chocolate – just think what you could buy if it were more than just pocket money.
Sueblimelys last blog post..Blogging Christmas Challenge
I think that making money with a general blog is probably the hardest. If it’s a blog on a topic (gadgets, seo, airplanes, etc) it would probably be much easier though.
gregs last blog post..Eye Glass Frames: Don’t Get Ripped Off
Greg, that’s a good point. Although you can use Adsense on a general blog (because it creates relevant ads for each individual page), a general topic blog has difficulty recruiting an advertiser that spans the entire blog. Also, a blog that uses affiliate links would often require affiliate relationships with multiple companies to cover the variety of topics on the blog.
Minnesota Attorneys last blog post..Minnesota S Corp Attorney
Yes as long as your topic is also reasonably popular and brings in enough readers. If you blogged about the Lesser Known Warbling Windcheater Bird” you may not get enough interest.
PS don’t Google the bird name, I made it up.
Sueblimelys last blog post..Blogging Christmas Challenge
I don’t blog to make money – I don’t even run AdSense on any of them – but I like to think that if I was able to devote myself full time to looking after a couple of blogs, I could make a living out of them. It’s certainly a nice thing to think about!
kays last blog post..Squeezebox Love
Kay, if you are interested in the possibility of blogging full time, maybe it would be worth experimenting with some ads on your blog to see what kind of income they generate—Just an idea.
Minneapolis Attorneys last blog post..Minneapolis Personal Injury Attorney – Accident in MN
It’s actually true, Sue – I did make more money “blogging” in 2008, although I made no real effort in this sense. I have AdSense on all my blogs and apparently it works pretty good for me.
Advertising space is reserved for Pamil Visions clients and friends only – those are “pro bono” positions – free, of course. I use them to test click-through rates, ad success, etc.
I was also testing some “make money” resources (like TLA, Sponsored Reviews, LinkWorth – by far the best – and others) – but mostly as an “advertiser” to see whether they are a good advertising alternative for my clients.
I could dedicate my efforts in 2009 to see how much money I could actually make from blogging, but I am afraid this is not really something that will fulfill my dreams…
What I can divulge is my intention of creating a new PR blog for Pamil Visions – a corporate blog. This will allow me to keep eWritings personal.
Good luck with the launch of the new blog, although as you have a dedicated following, not only of your corporate clients I am sure it will do very well.
Because of the PR topics on Pamil Visions the Adsense links are very targetted to what your readers may be looking for. Not all blogs lend themselves to that.
Your PR blog is an example showing that money making on blogs is not necessarily based on the ads we show but how well it advertises our other money making/business activities.
Sueblimelys last blog post..Blogging Christmas Challenge
I think you’re right that as more and more people become comfortable making purchases online, then there will be more companies willing to invest in their online presence, and advertise online, which will create more opportunities for bloggers to make money online. Let’s see what 2009 has in store.
Yes it will be interesting to review the situation at the end of 2009.
Sueblimelys last blog post..Blogging Christmas Challenge
I agree. But I’ve also noticed that the current economic conditions have caused some companies to decrease their online presence. Still, I think you are right that in the long run, online business will become increasingly competitive.
Minnesota Attorneys last blog post..Minneapolis Personal Injury Attorney – Accident in MN
This is a good list of reasons. It seems to me that as the blogging industry matures, it becomes more savvy, has more connections, and reaps an increasing ROI.
Minnesota Attorneys last blog post..Minnesota S Corp Attorney
Advertising agencies, who tend to employ younger staff who grew up with Web 2.0, should have the necessary up to date knowledge to understand how to maximise the use of blogs as an advertising medium. Whether they take advantage of that knowledge is a different matter of course.
Sueblimelys last blog post..Blogging Christmas Challenge
I think more people are turning to blogging as they realise it makes money. There are a lot of entrepreneurs that blog and make it look “easy” to make 1000′s of dollars (e.g. John Chow, Shoemoney) which gives the incentive for the rest of us to have a go.
I started last year and am doing fairly well with Adsense.
Happy New Year Sue. Good post, and don’t worry, you WILL make money in 2009!
Affiliate marketings last blog post..How to Hide Affiliate Link
If making money involves such techniques as hiding affiliate links then I am not sure I will make any money
Sueblimelys last blog post..Blogging Christmas Challenge
The main reason remaining is still “i want more money”
I have learned that what we want and what we need are often very different. For me life is happier even though my situation means I do not have as much money as I used to.
I would say my main reason would therefore be I want more money to fulfil an important need. For me that need for money is to go to Europe to visit my sister and brother (both now in their 60′s) and to take my younger son to see extended family. I also want to take along my partner to introduce him to his land of birth and to meet his “birth” family in real life. (so far communication has only been online and by telephone) (Often our own needs are satisfied by satisfying those of those close to us)
I concider blogging only one sector of market where we make money.I participate in estate and service sectors as well.Besides John Chow mentioned stock sector.
game-girls last blog post..?????? ???? (hilary duff)
Sue,
I think people are also becoming smarter with monetizing their blogs. God knows there is plenty of good tutorials on the topic and I think the poll results reflect that people learn.
AdSense and ad space selling are no longer the only monetization model people implement and as result – they earn more.
Alexs last blog post..Best Of WordPress Guide Spotter 2008
Very true, Alex there are good tutorials and blogs on the subject available.
Care has to be taken though, especially with affiliate type schemes, to make sure that the only person that makes money from you joining in isn’t just the author.
Sueblimelys last blog post..Blogging Christmas Challenge
I agree with you that making money with your blog has definitely become easier for even newbie bloggers that are just starting out. Everything you need is available online for free and if you just know who to listen to and where to find the right stuff you could easily build a great income with a little hard work in a year or two.
Mikaels last blog post..Banfield Pet Insurance Secrets Revealed
Yes, I think the opportunities to monetize a blog keep expanding. Every time you turn around there’s a new company offering attractive ads with handsome graphics, some of them pay-per-click, and others dependent on a visitor’s purchase, like Amazon. The more choices there are, the more likely it is that you can find one or two that fit your blog’s style and content perfectly.
I agree the opportunities to monetize are rather great and still getting wider but not everyone will see it and be able to take them.
There are plenty of opportunities nowadays but also a lot of concurrency. Anyway that is the interesting challenge to start new blog and make money with it.
Webkinzs last blog post..Webkinz Winter Fest 2009
I think a lot of bloggers would do better to use their experience and knowledge to start up new blogs in a not super popular niche rather than try to make money on their existing ones.
The current blog is likely the one that holds the most interest for them so the trick is to find not only a good niche but one that will also maintain the blogger’s interest.
Sueblimelys last blog post..Blogging Christmas Challenge
Sue raises a good point. Your blog should be both (1) a niche and (2) a topic that interests you. Most blogs fulfill the second requirement but not the first.
I believe blogging will be a more integral part of making money online in 2009 due to the fact that search engines like Google are so enthralled with WordPress as a CMS. I don’t even bother launching static niche sites these days. Everything is don using WordPress because of all the advantages with pinging, trackbacks, RSS and content management.
Best Affiliates last blog post..Social Media Optimization for Social Media Marketing
What Internet Marketers do is they have to try everything to promote their blog and seek their path to generate steady traffic eventually into sales conversions or namely CTR, I have asked myself to Internet Marketing Master what kind of CTR consider to be success, bluntly he told me that it is everyone secret on CTR, nobody in the world will have to known other CTR and it’s in the home recipe terminology, just do all those steps and let see what happens, don’t think too much, implement and more action required
Ari Lestarionos last blog post..New Year’s Resolution: Best Natural Foods for Longevity
I tend to think but not implement – so many blogging plans that I do not put into action. It does make sense to keep trying things out to see what works for you.
I think there’s another reason too: Blogging is drawing a lot more super-talented people (some of who now have more time on their hands because they are out of a job). Much of the best advice and more insightful commentary online today is not at big corporate websites but at individual and small-group blogs.
More and more are realizing the power of blogs as an important voice in the world. They are a place to express our own views and ideas, not only for the author but those leaving comments too. Established media and corporates are running blogs themselves to take advantage of this (and not to lose readers)
I suspect the effects of the economy on jobs and its impact on blogging is only just beginning to be seen. It takes some time and blogging knowhow for even super talented people to become well known enough to make an impact.
Sueblimelys last blog post..Blogging Christmas Challenge
I think a lot of people are making more money because blogging is still pretty new overall and it’ll be years before people have all figured out. I think most things on the internet are in early stages and will grow and change many times before the dust settles.
It is exciting to think of what developments may occur in the not too distant future. The ideas of Web 3.0 and a semantic web sound promising although there seems to be little evidence of it so far.
Currently available technologies can still offer much more too of course so who knows what is around the corner. This is the time of year to find many blog posts speculating on this.
Sueblimelys last blog post..Blogging Christmas Challenge
Sure you are right the internet and close services are too young ,so I think it is related to the infant period on the human scale of development. Many years must fly before we see its being mature .
I can imagine that in only a few years time images of modern day desktop computers and their jungle of wires will be something to laugh at.
We are infants in terms of evolution and our brains well underutilized. In the future we will connect to the net with our minds and blog just by thinking of what we want to say.
We will of course appear as holographs to our readers but, as with second life for example, will be able to take on whatever appearance we want.
Oh dear I just had a dreadful thought – we will get plaguiarized duplicate characters as well as duplicated posts appearing. Can you imagine the number of John Chows. And what about pop-ups!
Hey nice article.
Very interesting and useful for me.
thank you
Thank you. Glad you found it useful
Sueblimelys last blog post..Blogging Christmas Challenge
I feel the main reason is the huge increase in knowladge about how to earn money online. SEO and Social marketing is understood by more people, and more people write about it. Thank for the post.
I think more people are making more money because the NEED to because the lost their job, took a salary cut or are just unhappy to be bossed around by “the man”

I agree with Peter more and more people are coming to the affiliate market because they lost their job, I see that among my friends. But what will come out of it?
With the increase in amateur websites, Google may start to create a distinction between the professional and amateur sites. Those who spend significant time and money developing and promoting their websites will rise above the rest.

Nobody argue .And everybody knows the work takes much efforts and time and energy .You give it to your blog later the blog gives money to you.
I wouldn’t be surprised if a large part of it has to do with there being more bloggers and bloggers targeting other bloggers with their ads. And more bloggers blogging about blogging will want to advertise their blogs on other blogs. How ’bout that?

part of the increase in money from blogging is that most advertisers have cut back on traditional advertising (newspapers, direct mail/catalogs, directories etc.) and diverted more money to web based advertising with trackable metrics.

Before reading this article I’ve been thinking that blogging was just my hobby but now I begin to think over an oppotunity to make money with the help of blogging:)
Does the quantity of money depends on the topic of the blog? What do you think? To my mind it does – the more popular is the topic – the more visitors to the blog – the more money as a result.
I think that making money with a general blog is probably the hardest. If it’s a blog on a topic (gadgets, seo, airplanes, etc) it would probably be much easier though.
